2010-06-13

A fresh ice core directly from the drill. This 3.5 m long and 98 mm diameter rod of ice in one piece is truly an aesthetic experience. This ice core contains about 500 years of snowfall in a beautiful layered sequence from about 75,000 years ago. (c) read more: http://neem.nbi.ku.dk/field_diaries_folder/uk_diaries_2010/2010-06-13/

General
No satellite image available this morning but in general the conditions remain the same: considerable amounts of moisture at almost all levels but not saturated everywhere. This means variable amounts of clouds at variable heights. the risk for any snow showers has become very small. The wind is in general weak to moderate resultng in the creation of a surface inversion during the little hours.

12/06/10 - day 1
- Wind: S to SSE 6-12kt  after 15utc becoming S to SSW 2-6kt..
- Weather: variable layers of medium and high level clouds (Altostratus-Cirrostratus), with sunny spells. Relative high low level moisture content which maintains the risk of fog/stratus patches.
- Temperature: Min06utc=-102c dayMax(18utc)=-4C

13/06/10 - day 2
- Wind: less than 5kt from variable direction temporarily becoming calm.

vis011une

General
Quite a significant different satellite image this morning. The frontal depression is still present but has lost a lot of its structure and the vast cloud sheet of yesterday is breaking up. Still a lot of cloud around of course but also a quite significant amount of clear patches.
Remaing too warm.

12/06/10 - day 1
- Wind: S to SSE 8-13kt, no significant change throughout the day. A little decreasing after 21/24utc.
- Weather: still patches of Stratus (low clouds) but also clear, sunny spells. A snow shower is still possibly but becomes gradually less likely.
- Temperature: Min06utc=-12c dayMax(18utc)=-5C

12/06/10 - day 2
- Wind: S to SSW 4-8kt, after 15/18utc backing to S/SSE 4-8kt.
- Weather: quite a lot of low level moisture enlarge the risk for fog or stratus patches. But this should be a relative good day with sunny spells, no showers and variable amounts of high clouds.
- Temperature: (6utc)=-10°C (18utc)=-4°C.

13/06/10 - day 3
- Wind: S to SSE 5-10kt, temporarily veering to SSW to SW.
- Weather: mediuim and high level clouds (Altostratus/Cirrostratus) gradually further thickening becoming multilayered overcast with increasing risk for snow/snow shower
- Temperature: (6utc)=-8°C (18utc)=-4°C.

vis010une

Satellite image from noaa-18 (c)Weather Office Canada

General
This mornings satellite image shows a very exstensive sheetof low cloud over the Northwest of Greenland, covering the Neem Site completely. At a lot of places there are sheets of higher clouds as well. This is a Channel 3 image, showing the liquid water content of the clouds: the darker the clouds the more liquid water they content. Which also means the more risk for snow or snow showers, however the frequencey and intensity of the shower should not be too big.
In general remaining too warm.

10/06/10 - day 1
- Wind: S to SSW 5-10kt, no significant change throughout the day.
- Weather: solidly overcast with with especially low clouds. Temporarily higher/thicker clouds will shift over, increasing the risk for snow showers.
- Temperature: Min06utc=-14c dayMax(18utc)=-6C

11/06/10 - day 2
- Wind: S to SSE 10-15kt, after 18/21utc becoming S 6-10kt.
- Weather: thinner cloud layers allowing some weak sunny spells. risk fo fog and Stratus patches as the low level moisture content is quite high! Mainly no precipitation but the odd shower can not be excluded.
- Temperature: (6utc)=-12°C (18utc)=-6°C.

12/06/10 - day 3
- Wind: S 6-10kt, no significant change.
- Weather: again a lot of cloud at different levels but especially patches of Stratus (fog). Sunny spells are most likely very weak.
- Temperature: (6utc)=-8°C (18utc)=-4°C.

General
Amazing satellite picture this morning: almost the whole of Greenland is covered by clouds. The Southern and Central parts are covered by a frontal depression of which the center is positioned near S72°W37°. The weather over the North of Greenland is still dominated by the remnants of an olf frontal system. As the next days there is weak anticyclonic development, conditions should start to improve, but very slowly.

09/06/10 - day 1
- Wind: S to SSW 4-8kt after 15/18utc becoming SW 6-10kt
- Weather: solidly overcast with still some slight snow/snow shower. No significant change.
- Temperature: Min06utc=-8c dayMax(18utc)=-4C

10/06/10 - day 2
- Wind: S to SSE 8-12kt, no significant change.
- Weather: very cloudy but gradually/slowly improving with some weak sunny spells.
- Temperature: (6utc)=-10°C (18utc)=-6°C.

11/06/10 - day 3
- Wind: SSE 10-15kt, after 18/21utc becoming S to SSW 8-12kt.
- Weather: again becoming very cloudy to overcast. Patchy low clouds with possibly some fog patches. Temporarily some slight snow.
- Temperature: (6utc)=-10°C (18utc)=-4°C.

The Greenland ice cap ending near Kangerlussuaq (c) Marc De Keyser

General
On the satellite picture of this morning, it is well visible that the Neem area is covered by two layers of clouds: the most significant one is a persistent layer of low clouds, Stratus, whih is thick enough to produce some snow/snow showers. Tomorrow conditions will be pretty much the same although a little improvement is possible: no more snow fall and gradually thinning of the cloud cover.

07/06/10 - day 1
- Wind: SSW 4-8kt after 15utc becoming SW 8-12kt
- Weather: solidly overcast with periods of sno/snow showers. No significant change.
- Temperature: Min06utc=-10c dayMax(18utc)=-6C

08/06/10 - day 2
- Wind: SW 7-12kt after 18/21utc becoming WSW 4-8kt
- Weather: very cloudy in the lower levels: Stratus with possibly some slight snow but improving, especially after 21/24utc.
- Temperature: (6utc)=-8°C (18utc)=-5°C.

09/06/10 - day 3
- Wind: WSW 2-6kt, no significant change.
- Weather: patchy low clouds with weak, short lived sunny spells.
- Temperature: (6utc)=-10°C (18utc)=-6°C.

dsc_0083dsc_0105

The Greenland icecap near Kangerlussuaq (c) Marc De Keyser

General
The frontal system has completely dissolved, leaving only a few patches of especially high clouds over the North of Greenland. The Southern parts of Greenland are now covered by an active frontal depression.
The next few days, especially tomorrow and the day after, remains very moist, resulting mist or fog patches, and periods with low clouds, sometimes thick enough to produce some slight snow. Today however looks pretty good.

05/06/10 - day 1
- Wind: S to SSW 6-10kt becoming S 4-8kt.
- Weather: sunny with patches of high clouds, Cirrus and Cirrostratus. After 21/24utc formation of fog/mit patches
- Temperature: Min06utc=-18c dayMax(18utc)=-6C

06/06/10 - day 2
- Wind: S to SSW 5-10kt after 15/18utc becoming SW to WSW 4-8kt
- Weather: mist and fog patches, with pretty high low level moisture content: periods with low clouds alternated with sunny spells. Possibly slight snow fall as well, especially towards the evening. I would think that the visibility remains rather poor to moderate
- Temperature: (6utc)=-15°C (18utc)=-7°C.

07/06/10 - day 3
- Wind: SSW 2-5kt, becoming after 12/15utc WSW to W 4-8kt .
- Weather: strong surface inversion with mist and fog patches, remaining very moist, especially in the lower levels, so mist/ fog is likely to be persistent. tempo some slight snow.
- Temperature: (6utc)=-18°C (18utc)=-8°C.
