Kite Greenland 2010: Forecast 16 May - day 12

New position of the guys on the ice is N66°14.588′ W42°54.220′. So they are gradually building up some distance. And the next days will offer some possiblities as well! Forecast sent by 4 Iridium txt messages:

Advice: Tomorrow nice kite day, after 15/18tc even 15-20kt during most of the night. nxt day rapdily becmg weak. So try to kite during the night as well.

Now the storm is over, everything is calm again. Not exactly want Carl and Jon want! On the other hand there are a few possiblities to cover some distance.

General: the worst part of the storm is over, and yes the wind dies off almost completely. There are a few spells with slightly more wind, so maybe they can cover some distance with that.
Hopefully they dont loose courage with those slack conditions because the wind within the near future is not promising.

This forecast is sent to Carl and Jon on the Greenland ice cap using 4 Iridium phone txt messages:

Wind: NNW 7-12kt, after 12/15utc becoming variable 3-6kt
Wx: sunny spells, after 15/18utc becoming overcast with slight snow.
Temps: -15C later -6C

Wind: NW 3-8kt, between 9-15utc becoming NW 5-10kt.
Wx: overcast with slight snow, after 12/15utc enlarging sunny spells.
Temps:-6C later -4C

Wind: N to NE 5-10kt after 15utc weak/calm!
Wx: sunny spells and cloudy periods. fair.

Advice: if possible travel as much Northwards as possible because on longer term most pressure in the sails north of 67°N

Satellite picture of Greenland shows the North of Greenland almost completely covered with clouds, mostly high clouds but, especially over the western parts dense lower clouds as well. Low level moisture content points at the possibility of fog patches.

12/05/10 - day 1
- Wind: SW 8-12kt, after 18/21utc slightly decreasing to 4-8kt and veering to WNW
- Weather: significant amounts of thick medium and high level clouds (Alto- and Cirrostratus) with initially some slight snow or snow showers. Later weak sunny spells.
- Temperature: Min06utc=-14c dayMax(18utc)=-10C

13/05/10 - day 2
- Wind: wind turns from WNW via N to NE with a speed of 3-8kt.
- Weather: fog patches with still Altostratus and Cirrostratus. (Weak) sunny spells.    
- Temperature: (6utc)=-22°C (18utc)=-16°C.

14/05/10 - day 3
- Wind: E 3-7kt, veering to S.
- Weather: sunny spells with fog patches. Patches of high clouds.

Jon and Carl have been asking for wind, well the’ll get wind! A storm depression deepens between Greenland and Iceland, resulting in a strong Northerly wind over the East Coast of the Mid parts of Greenland. This storm will last for about 24-36hours and after that: calm again.

Wind: near gale! NW 28-33kt gust 40-45kt, no significant change
Wx: sunny, blowing snow
Temps: -6C later -4C

Wind: NW 28-32kt average; decreasing: after 18utc 5-10kt.
Wx: sunny, blowing snow later becoming overcast. snow shower.
Temps:-12C later -8C

Wind: N 5-10kt, aftr 15/18utc calm!
Wx: very cloudy, snow showers.
Temp:min-12C/max:-8C

Advice: after storm again death calm. Try to get North of 67d, there will be a little more pressure in the sails. Take care. M

Forecast fore Jon and Carl on the East coast of Greenland. They have been suffering of high temperatures and calm winds for days now. Tomorrow night things are going to change. Suddenly and dramaticly!

Advice: storm tomorrow night and 12th is confirmed. Too windy to kite but after 15utc wind could becmg into limits to kite. Do not ask too much for wind ;)

This is a forecast surface map valid for 12 May. After a period of slack wind a storm is expected to rapidly pop up during the night of 11th on the 12th and persist throughout the day of the 12th. At the western flank of the low pressure center between Greenland and Iceland a strong Northerly wind develops. Carl&Jon’s position is indicated with the black arrow. If this forecast is right than they will finally have some wind. Probably too much wind.

The next three days are ‘Anti-Greenland’ weather: hot and calm! During the day temperatures rise up to +2 degrees C, whilst it is remaining pretty calm. Maybe in the early morning Carl and Jon might have some slight wind, but this is only very shortlived. So i am afraid they wil have to pull their sledges another few days. Could be that the 11th brings on some wind. Might be a lot of wind… (c) Picture Marc De Keyser
