This map shows the synoptic situation for today 28 of August at 12000utc. The powerful anticyclonic ridge extends over the East Russia into the East Siberian Sea and moves slowly to the East. Weather Forecast North East West passage -28 Aug- day 46
General situation
Tricky situation: the Russian anticyclone (high pressure system) expands over the Eastern parts of the East Siberian Sea and as a result the wind becomes very weak along the expected track of the Northern Passage. Especially today the wind has an off day.
Tomorrow a depression tracks Eastwards along the Northern side of the former high pressure (along the 80-81 parallel) which leads to a temporarily wind increase. But on Monday the high pressure takes over again and the wind becomes weak again.
On longer term, by Tuesday the high pressure starts moving further away to the East and the pressure gradient over the Chukchi Sea increases gradually, which implies an increasing wind. Unfortunately this is mainly from the ESE to SSE’ly sector.
(All forecasted winds are average values).
