PolarIce10-Kite trip from Hahn Glacier to Ilulissat – day 8 – 13 April 10

katabatic-wind-dist

This image shows the katabatic wind distribution over the SOuthern part of the Greenland Ice Cap. The ‘divide’ the ice cap in the Eastern and Western part. On the Eastern part, where the PolarIce team currently is, the katabatic wind blows from the WNW to NNW’ly sector. This is only altered by the passage of depressions or anticyclones. On the Western side, across the dive, the katabatic winds turn to the SE. So usually the first leg of the trip is the most difficult one, going uphill and against the wind. Tackin up is the only way to kite this part of the trip. (click on the image to enlarge it)

14ap:N66°/W40°.5: Storm
Wind: NNW 20-25kt, after 12ut becmg 25-30kt average (gust 35-40kt)
Wx: gradually clearing: sunny spells, blowing snow
Temp:-10C

15ap:N66.2/W41.2
Wind: N14-18kt, after 12ut becmg NNE 5-10kt

16april N66.7/W42
Wind: N to NNE 6-10kt, slightly increasing
Wx: sunny Temp: -15C.

Advice:
The following days mainly N to NWly winds. This is typical katabatic for this region. Take advantage of this to go W. Across the divide katabatic wind turns generally SE. Use this to tack up North
